What Does a School Counselor Do?
School Counselors support students in three different areas: academic, career, and social/emotional development. I work to support families and students through the following actions:
Academic:
- Managing 504 Plans
- Collaborating with teachers
- Suggesting accommodations for student success
- Working with parents to identify and remove barriers to regular attendance
- Coordinating the Gifted (EGS) screening process
- Conducting standardized assessments in aptitude and achievement for struggling students
- Advocating for student needs
Career:
- Providing classroom lessons on career exploration, entrepreneurship, connecting personal interests and aptitudes to careers, and learning about our local Vo-Tech School, Cumberland Perry Career and Technical Center.
- Encouraging students to make connections to what they are learning now and their futures
Social/Emotional:
- Meeting with students individually and in small groups to help them develop skills and knowledge
- Conducting monthly classroom lessons
- Connecting families to community resources
- Promote positive attitudes and values among students
- Working with new students and families to help them become acclimated to our school
